This means that you will need strong interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to see a situation from more than one point of view.
How can I prepare for a career in childcare?

- Studying a childcare course
- Working as a volunteer at a crèche, playschool, or aftercare centre.
- Looking after your nephews, nieces, or younger siblings.
- Babysitting for your friends.
Besides looking at your qualifications and training, prospective employers are going to look at how much experience you have in working with children. They are also going to look at whether you have good references from previous employers. It may therefore be a good idea to study a childcare course part-time, so that you can start gaining experience while you complete your course. It is quite possible to start out in a junior childcare job, and to work your way up from there. You could, for example, start out by working as an au pair to gain experience, and then go on to study towards a formal qualification in childcare if you decide that you want to work as a pre-school teacher or ECD practitioner.
